Vacancies for doctors to work in Brunei

We have received a lot of requests on how to apply for work in Brunei. I'm not sure what is the official requirements for doctors in Brunei, but having worked here for almost 2 years, I can say that we are still short of doctors both in the Health Services (GPs) and in the Medical Services (Hospitals).

We have about 460 doctors working with the government of which 2/3 are expatriates. We serve a population of about 300,000 people at 4 different districts, Brunei Muara, Tutong, Kuala Belait & Temburong. So the ratio of doctors to population is about 1 to 800 not taking into account the attrition rate.

If you are interested to work in Brunei, below are information regarding on how to apply

This information has been extracted from the official MoH Website

Vacancies are follows:

Requirements

  • Recognized basic medical degree
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification
  • At least 5 years of post-registration working experience
  • Working in a job relevant to the post being applied for

Salary and level of appointment will be determined by qualifications and experience.

Benefits:

  • Tax-Free salary
  • Passage to Brunei Darussalam for you, your wife and up to four children under the age of 18 years.
  • Heavily-subsidized housing, charged only at BND130 per month.
  • Education allowance of up to BND800 per month for up to four children.
  • Free treatment at government facilities for you and your wife, and your children under the age of 18 years who are resident in Brunei.
  • 48 days of paid annual leave.
  • Shipment of personnel effects.
  • 25% gratuity on successful completion of contract.

How to apply:

  • Download and print application form (SPA 1).
  • Send completed form with required documents to relevant Department (Medical or Health).
  • Required documents:

a. Up-to-date CV giving details about the work you are doing now and have been doing in the last 5 years, and your clinical skills and responsibilities, as well as information about the hospital or clinic you are working at size, workload etc.

b. Proof of registration after completion of medical training.

c. Copies of your certificates

d. A copy of a letter/certificate of Good Standing from your present Medical licensing board (under which you are currently practicing) which should be less than
6 months old.

e. The names, full postal addresses and other contact details (and preferably email addresses) of at least three referees.

Please also provide an email address for ease of contact.

Applicants considered suitable will be invited by the Public Service Commission to attend an interview. Successful applicants will normally be given 3-year contracts. In exceptional circumstances two year contracts will be considered.

Applicants must be prepared to work in any of the four Districts of Brunei Darussalam.

How do salaries in Brunei compare? I'm a US anesthesiologist and even though I like the idea of working in Brunei for a few years I'm not sure I'm willing to take much of a pay cut. So how do you think they compare?

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

The payscale in Brunei is nothing comparable to the US. It's the perks that you get as an expat, Free housing, education allowances for your kids and 25% gratuity of your total pay accumulated after 3 years contract.

Just for your references, as a specialist/consultant your pay is BND$6,800 plus M Allowance (only for specialist) of BND$1,200. So thats about $8,000 per month (US 5,685).

That's all tax-free.

Then standard of living here is quite good. Petrol is cheap, electricity and water is very cheap. It's a good place if you enjoy peace and quiet. But if you are the fast-paced cosmo city type, then Brunei may not fulfill your needs.

But here you can find time to play golf! haha...

How about surgical specialities? Quality of life? Schools College for children etc?

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

Apart from General Surgery (includes Urology & Breast Surgery) and Orthopaedics, RIPAS Hospital also provide ENT, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Neurosurgery and Opthalmology services. However we are still lacking Plastic Surgery & we don't have enough Neurosurgeons (1 specialist only).

If you are thinking of settling here in Brunei with your family, there are no shortages of good schools and colleges for your children. There are at least 2 good international school that I know of in the main city, Jerudong International School (JIS) and International School of Brunei (ISB). There are 2 universities and one technical institute.

Brunei is a small peaceful country with around 300,000 plus population. It is an Islamic country so there is no pubs, dischotheque and sale of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited.

The nearest neighbouring city Miri (Malaysia) is only 2 - 3 hours drive away, and is the most frequently visited place for expats seeking some extra leisure.

I hope that answers your question John.

Dr zaheer said...

salam!...Is the Relevant post-graduate qualification necessary for applying?

Doctors mess Brunei said...

Dr Zaheer, normally MBBS is sufficient with relevant clinical experience to apply for medical officer post. But most of our General physician have MD due to the large number of applicants.

M.O. (M16) = $3260 - $4595 (MBBS +/- M.D.)
M.O. (M16A)= $4750 (usually MD)
S.M.O. (M17) = $5400 (usually membership of royal college and above)

hi docs,
can anyone tell me how long the whole process take from the time of application?what type of exerience will be more considered Hospital/GP?will their be any practical interview after phone interview?

Dr Geetha Unnikrishnan said...

Hello docs! Am an Anesthesiologist ,with an MD from India, with more than 12 years of experience after my postgraduation.I and my husband who is an ENT surgeon (MS with ~20years of experience)are looking out for a job in Brunei and would like to know if there are any vacancies for us currently. We are presently working in a private hospital in Saudi Arabia. Please let us know at the earliest.Thanking you in anticipation.
Dr Geetha unnikrishnan

messdoctor said...

Dr Geetha,
I think we still need anaesthesiologist, but I'm not so sure about ENT. Currently we have quite a big ENT team/department, so you'd have to enquire to dgms office about that. Or perhaps speak to the head of department Mr Garg.

Btw isn't the pay in Saudi better than Brunei?

Dr.Shahbaz Haider
hi their, I applied to the given linked they replied that we recieved ur cv but right now we dont have any vacancy. Im a doctor done my mbbs from karachi university and diploma and master from university shieffield in nephrology wht the paye scale for me hope some one contact me regards
shahbazhai@yahoo.com

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

Dr Shahbaz Haider,
I think they are pretty sorted for the renal team. If they did have a vacancy and your accepted, it depends on the number of years and experience you have. They only recognizes membership (UK) and Master of Medicine (Singapore & Malaysia). After that it's Advance Specialist Training that is recognized.

Other Post graduate qualifications are assessed individually. Some go to M16 some M16A.

Have a read of the more recent career in Hospital medicine flowchart that we've posted to get a better idea

miray said...

I am a board certified Internist in the US. I have 11 years post residency experience, working predominantly in hospital medicine with critical care experience (though not certified in critical care). Are there any vacancies that would suit my experience at this time? I am a Malaysian citizen, so I speak fluent Malay (if that makes a difference!). Just exploring options here. thank you!

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

If you are specialist board certified you are likely going for consultant post here. The best advice I think would be to forward your query to our head of Critical Care Service, he is also one of the panel for interviewing. Here is his e-mail
zulaidilatif@yahoo.com

Good Luck!

hi,
i am dr sai jp working as lecturer in pharmacology in a medical university of libya. i had a MD degree in pharmacology. i would like to know if there are any medical colleges in brunei and if they recruit pharmacologists for teaching undergrduate doctors
thanks

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

Dr Sai, for teaching jobs I would suggest you inquire directly with Institute of Medicine at University Brunei Darussalam. I think they will be able to anwer your questions better

Doctors Mess Brunei said...

Dr Razi, your pursuing a diploma in public health but your interest is in Maternal and Child Health. If you're interested to do Public Health, you can apply through to department of health services, it will be the same for Community Maternal and Child Health Care. But I think they usually employ female docs only.. They usually require you to write in and send your CV.

May I know my chance to get the job in Brunei. I have nearly seven years experiences in the field of surgeries after my graduation including two years in urology and four years in general surgery and six months in trauma surgery. I had completed MRCSEd on Jan 2012 and currently working under MOH in Oman as a general surgeon . Although I am now working as a medical officer at the moment, I am going to promote as specialist very soon because I need to pass two years after joining in the current job as per the ministry protocol in Oman. I would be great full if u tell me about the possibility of mine to get a job in MOH Brunei.
